vertical river

The installation comprises 288 test tubes of water collected during a 24 hour row from midday to midday from the river Severn at Worcester. Each test tube was filled at 5 minute intervals. The test tubes were then installed in time sequence in the stairwell void at Worcester City Art Gallery. Adjacent to the work on the walls were historic paintings of river scenes. Vertical River was a futile attempt to capture and fix the unfixable. Commissioned by Deborah Dean.

Vertical River was also installed at Oriel Mostyn as part of 'Afon' an exhibition including Richard Long and David Nash. Curated by Martin Barlow. (image top left)
